Humbling Priorities
Paul McGuire
Listen
– Luke 14:11 – “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Inquire
– It’s easy to think more of ourselves when things are going well. When life seems to be moving right along, you become more confident and proficient in your job, the kids are doing well in school and the bills are paid, that’s when we’re in danger of thinking more highly of ourselves than we should. It’s when we are at the most risk of resting on our laurels, proud of ourselves for what we’ve accomplished.
Faith
The verse that comes to mind is Romans 8:28, where Paul writes “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” The good is from God, not from anything that we do for ourselves. It is only through living in His grace that we experience life’s blessings. At the very moment that we begin to think that we’ve done something on our own, we have a tendency to take charge and try to control our own destiny. Without placing our full trust, faith, and confidence in Jesus Christ, anything we can do and accomplish on our own will be far short of the glorious blessings that God wants to heap on us. Philippians 4:13 reminds us that we can do all things through Christ and His strength.
Experience
Father, help me in my faithfulness. Remind me that all good things come from you. Let me live my life in such a way that you are honored and glorified. Amen
