“Trip Down the Information Highway”
Cindie Jenkins
Listen
L-Psalm 8— O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. You have set your glory above the heavens. From the lips of infants and children you have ordained praise because of your enemies to silence foe and avenger. When I consider your heavens and the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the sea. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Inquire
The beginning of this psalm reminds me of the children’s prayer that starts, “God is great. God is good.” Jesus told us to have faith like a child. The simple words of that prayer are satisfactory worship to God. Just how great is God? That answer is beyond what our language has words to describe, but the psalmist, David, refers to the work of God’s fingers. David mentions the heavens and the stars. Follow me on a trip down the information highway here: Our sun is just an average star out of 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars. The farthest object of light viewed in our universe is a star-like object called a quasar, whose light left its point of origin over a billion years ago before reaching us. That’s pretty great, and that includes only territory that we know exists. A NASA web site indicates there are so many factors needed to perfectly come together in such specific ways to support life that life on Earth is highly improbable. But with God all things are possible. God is great.
Faith
How good is God? David tells us God has made us ruler over all His living creations. One web site puts the number He has entrusted us with at about 3 million. He has made us just below the angels and crowned us with glory and honor. (Wow! Let that sink in a minute.) All of this, and it keeps getting better. God has sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins. We deserve or earn none of these gifts, they are given to us out of amazing love. God is good.
Experience
Dear God, you are great and you are good. Amen
