“It’s Raining Frogs”
Cindie Jenkins
Listen
Exodus 7: 25-8:2—Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. If you refuse to let them go, I will plague your whole country with frogs…
Inquire
One night I was riding along a rural road in the rain with my mother-in-law. The raindrops bouncing off the asphalt road looked extremely large, until we realized they were actually frogs—everywhere. It appeared to be raining frogs. On the way home, the rain had subsided some and my mother-in-law (who is sweet and definitely not the type of mother-in-law for comedians’ fodder) offered to capture one of the frogs for me to display in my elementary school classroom. So, I let her. She covered it with a large plastic soda cup and caged it there until we got home to her kitchen. There, she set it free. Not on purpose, but froggy was free. We jumped more than he did. And we screamed much more than he did. Something about the way frogs move and look and feel is so alien to me that even though I know the whole wart thing is just an old wives’ tale, I just don’t want to handle one. I certainly wouldn’t want my whole house, including my bed, filled with them.
Faith
Of the ten plagues God sent upon Egypt I can’t decide which one I think is the worst. Even gnats just irritate the stew out of me. Every time I read about the plagues (or see the movie) I think, “Pharaoh, what else do you need?” The truth is, Pharaoh was not a believer in our Lord. I am, and I still disobey God. I see God’s awesome power and miracles around me on a daily basis, yet I still fail to obey him consistently. “Girl, what else do you need?” However, my motive for obeying God should not be that I fear his wrath, but that I love Him. Because he first loved me. He also knew there would be times when I fell short, so he sent the greatest miracle of all, Jesus. He is so good!
Experience
Father God, Thank you for loving me. Guide me in showing my love by obeying you. Amen
