Psalm 23 (King James Version)1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. |

The Twenty-third Psalm is probably the most recognized and memorized psalm in the Book of Psalms. It is written in the King James Version above because it is probably the most familiar version. David wrote the psalm using the analogy of the Lord God as a shepherd because David had a background as a shepherd. He understood the shepherd was the caregiver of the flock. The shepherd provided food, water, a place to rest, and protection. |

In the New Testament Jesus is called the good shepherd, the great Shepherd, and the Chief Shepherd. As a good shepherd Jesus will provide our needs. But, we must be good sheep to receive them. We must follow the Shepherd or lose our way. He leads us down the paths of righteousness. He provided the pathway well before Mapquest or GPS. The pathway is mapped out in the Bible, and the route doesn’t change. Along the path are tempting side roads, but following the Shepherd is the only guaranteed way to make it to the destination: dwelling in the house of the Lord forever. |
