Mark 3:31-34—Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” |

We know that Jesus was not denying or disowning his mother Mary and his brothers in this Scripture, as there are stories of Jesus’ interaction with his biological family found in other parts of the Bible. Jesus was actually accepting others into his family. Jesus makes the point that the people who choose to do God’s will by following him are his family.
A short time after I had my daughter I was officially diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. MS is a disease that has a very unpredictable prognosis, ranging from mild symptoms to complete disability. My case started with very mild symptoms, and my husband and I struggled with the decision to have another child or not. We finally decided not, so my daughter is an only child. Still, we remained concerned about our daughter growing up without siblings and not having brothers or sisters as an adult. |

Again, Jesus has good news. My daughter is not an only child. Because she has accepted Christ, her family is huge. So many brothers and sisters we should have a reality show. And I didn’t have to raise them! All Christians, as Jesus said, are her family. |

Father God, thank you for your love and for providing extended family through our brothers and sisters in Christ. Amen |
